Botox is one of the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedures available. It consists of one of seven types of toxin produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. It was first approved by the FDA, for cosmetic use in 2002 and is marketed by Allergan.
How Botox Works
Botox injections cause selective muscles at the injection site to become de-sensitized and prevent them from contracting. A muscle contracts when it receives a message from a nerve. In order for the nerve to communicate with muscle tissue it sends a signal via a chemical called acetylcholine, which in turn causes a series of chemical actions that make the muscle contract. Botox works by blocking the muscle’s acetylcholine receptors which essentially leaves the muscle paralyzed without causing any damage to either the nerve or the muscle.
Acetylcholine blockage usually takes place within 48 hours of having an injection and is not reversible. The actual effects of the injection become noticeable within 5-10 days. Over the subsequent 5-6 months the muscle will gradually develop new receptor sites for acetylcholine to attach to and will be able to contract again.
One of the causes of wrinkles such as frown lines and crow’s feet is small muscle contractions. Facial expressions such as frowning, smiling and squinting can cause these wrinkles to become more prominent. This is why the selection of injection points is crucial to Botox’s effectiveness. As the skin ages it loses elasticity and will eventually form permanent creases that are noticeable even without muscle contractions. Though Botox is unable to completely remove these wrinkles, it can soften their appearance. Botox typically reduces visible wrinkles by 80 percent.
How Much Does Botox Cost?
Most cosmetic surgeons charge for Botox treatment by the area, the three most common areas being the forehead, lines between the brows and the crow’s feet. These three areas generally use 60 units of Botox, which will cost an estimated $600.
