What Is The Difference Between Rhinoplasty and Septoplasty?

Both rhinoplasty and septoplasty are types of cosmetic surgical procedures for the nose but they are both very different procedures. Here is an explanation of each one.

Rhinoplasty is cosmetic surgical procedure that is performed to augment or enhance the aesthetics and the shape and form of your nose. It may also be performed to correct and restore the functions of your nose. Rhinoplasty has a number of benefits including:

  • adjusting the size of the nose in relation to the proportion of the face
  • change the width of the bridge of the nose or the position of the nostrils
  • remove bulges or depressions in the nose profile
  • enhance a nose tip that is large or droopy.
  • reduce the size of wide nostrils
  • correct nasal asymmetry

septoplasty is a surgical procedure that corrects a deviated septum – the thin piece of cartilage that separates the nostrils. This particular procedure does not alter the shape of the nose; it just straightens a crooked septum. A deviated septum can be problematic because it can cause an obstruction of the nasal passageways. During the procedure, the surgeon will make an incision inside the nose. The layer of mucosa covering the septum is lifted from the cartilage and the crooked septum is either reshaped to reopen the nasal passages or partially removed.
