  1. Eat Carefully

For the first couple of days after surgery, you should stick to a liquid diet and soft foods. You can gradually add semi-solid foods and move onto more solid foods after a few days. You should avoid hot or spicy foods the first 24 hours, and do not drink using straws for one week.

  1. Get Plenty of Rest

Although you may feel like getting right back into your normal daily routine, relaxing is essential for your long-term recovery. When lying down, keep your head elevated with pillows. Wait for a few days after surgery before you do any strenuous exercise or heavy lifting.

  1. Use Salt Water

Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water several times each day will help to reduce pain and swelling.

  1. Exercise Your Mouth

Your jaw will feel stiff immediately after surgery. Open it slowly for the first time. Exercise your jaw by slowly opening your mouth wide several times each day until the stiffness has gone.

  1. Control Bleeding

Your oral surgeon will provide you will gauze to reduce the bleeding. After the first few hours, you may want to replace these with cold water soaked tea bags to help promote clotting.
