As part of your orthodontic treatment to correct an improper bite and/or teeth irregularity, orthodontic-related surgical procedures may be required. If this is the case for you, it is likely that your orthodontist or dentist will refer you to Riverside Oral & Facial Surgery, so that you may receive your surgical procedure in our state-of-the-art facility.
Orthodontic-related procedures can include:
Exposure and bonding of impacted teeth
- It’s not always necessary to remove an impacted or “stuck” tooth. Exposure and bonding of impacted teeth is an orthodontic-related procedure where the tooth is brought into proper alignment by removing the overlaying gum and bone to expose the tooth. Usually, a bracket is bonded to the tooth with an attached gold chain for the orthodontist to pull on after exposing it. Your orthodontist is specially equipped to perform this orthodontic-related procedure using various springs or elastic bands to guide the tooth into the mouth.
Up-righting of impacted teeth (temporary anchorage devices [TAD])
- This orthodontic-related procedure involves the surgical placement of small screws into the jaw to facilitate tooth movement. The TAD is then later removed a few months later when it is no longer needed. Surgical placement of TADs may be done in the office setting either under local anesthesia or with sedation.
