Overview of the Procedure
Platelet Rich Plasma is a treatment used to enhance the healing process of injuries to soft tissue and bone. A patient’s own blood is used to speed healing and promote bone and soft tissue growth through growth factors in the platelet layer of their own blood.
Reasons for the Procedure
Patients opt for the Platelet Rich Plasma procedure because they want to accelerate the healing process. PRP may be needed to prepare the jaws for dental implants.
What to Expect
A sample of your blood is extracted and the platelets are isolated through use of a centrifuge. The platelets are then injected into the wound along with bone grafts or gingival grafts. The healing process will likely be sped up through the platelet’s proteins promoting tissue regeneration and growth.
You will need to rest for a short period of time after the surgery. You will experience pain for several days, but this can be managed with medication. You will need to come in for a follow-up appointment within one to two weeks. Depending on the healing process, additional Platelet Rich Plasma may be required.
